Senate Republicans are intensifying their efforts to bring the Laken Riley Act to the forefront. This proposed legislation mandates that federal immigration authorities arrest and detain illegal immigrants charged with theft or burglary. In a recent letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin, 11 Senate Republicans, including all GOP members of the Judiciary Committee, pressed for immediate consideration of the bill. They urged Durbin to schedule a mark-up of this bipartisan measure.
Senators Katie Britt of Alabama and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina spearheaded this initiative, emphasizing the urgent need for the Laken Riley Act. They pointed to the staggering number of encounters with illegal aliens at the southern border, which has exceeded 7.8 million during the Biden Administration. This number surpasses the individual populations of 37 states and is larger than the population of any U.S. city except New York City.
“The Laken Riley Act is the bipartisan border bill that should have been on the Senate floor this week. If this legislation had been the law, Laken Riley would still be alive today,” stated Britt, a co-sponsor of the measure and the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee.
Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was tragically abducted and killed in February while jogging on the University of Georgia campus. The man charged with her murder, Jose Antonio Ibarra, is an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who had previously been arrested in New York but was not detained by ICE. He was charged with Riley’s murder after having been released despite previous encounters with law enforcement.
Before being indicted for felony murder, Ibarra was arrested in New York for endangering a child and cited in Georgia for misdemeanor shoplifting in October 2023, along with his brother, Diego Ibarra. In their letter, the Republican senators described Ibarra as one of the millions of illegal immigrants granted parole under the current administration. They criticized the unprecedented increase in parole grants under President Biden, noting a rise from an annual average of less than 6,000 under previous administrations to over 1.3 million a year under the current administration.
Graham emphasized, “The least Democrats can do is allow committee consideration of the Laken Riley Act. We must change our laws to prevent more cases like Ms. Riley’s.”
The Laken Riley Act aims to ensure that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests illegal immigrants who commit theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting and mandates their detention until they are removed from the United States. He urges the Senate to take up the legislation to “ensure justice for Laken and give ICE more tools to detain and deport criminal illegal aliens before they commit more serious crimes.”
